Snake bites start early

Pet owners are warned we have already seen a snake bite this year.Klunk

Dr Paul May, who runs the Kilmore and Wallan clinics, is concerned to see a snake bite in August.

“I’ve worked as a vet in the area for over four years now, and I’ve never seen a snake bit so early in the year. Usually, we don’t start to see them until the warmer weather kicks in around October,” he says.

Luckily, the prompt action of Klank's owners paid off. A quick blood test confirmed a potentially lethal dose of venom, but after receiving the anti-venom and spending a night on fluids in the clinic’s hospital, he was able to return home the next day.

Paul says it’s important other local pet owners are aware of this incident, so they can exercise the caution usually reserved for summer months now.

“I urge pet owners to be extra vigilant over the next couple of months, especially when the sun is out. That means keeping a close eye on pets playing the garden, and keeping dogs on the leash when out walking in bush areas, or areas with lots of long grass.”

If your pet does receive a snake bite, Paul says it is vital owners get them to the vet immediately.

“Thanks to the prompt action of his owners, Klank is absolutely fine now and back at home with his family. Had his family not got him to us so quickly, it would have been a different story,” he warns.

High Service, Low Fees

MPVIn a recent survey we were delighted to discover our fees are rated in the bottom 12% of all veterinary clinics participating, and the bottom 20% of Victorian clinics surveyed.

Everyone at the Northern Veterinary Group strives to provide all our clients with the highest level of care and service and we were very pleased to receive these encouraging results.

The survey of over 400 veterinary practices looked into the standard veterinary fees charged by participating clinics across all areas such as vaccinations, surgery, blood tests and product costs.

It gives us great satisfaction to know we continue to provide the highest level of care, using state-of-the-art equipment, at reasonable prices.
